Yoga Styles

The general term for all physical yoga is Hatha Yoga. Out of all the many styles of yoga, those with ancient and traditional roots, as well as newer, trendier versions, all are simply variations of Hatha.

There are many excellent research sources which can help you find the yoga style that best fits your lifestyle and goals. Two sources offering excellent descriptions of the various styles, as well as a general introduction to yoga are www.yogasite.com and www.yoga.com.

  3. Follow Student Guidelines

    • Consult with your doctor before starting yoga classes...

...if you are taking medication, under the care of a doctor or have severe physical limitations. If you do have severe physical limitations, you may want to consider private instruction.

    • Avoid eating for at least 2 hours prior to yoga class...

...as it is best to practice on an empty stomach. However, be sure to drink plenty of water before and after class.

    • Prepare to be barefoot...

...as you will find that it is easier to get a firm grip on the floor or mat while practicing.

    • Please arrive on time & leave your cell phone & pager off...

...not only will you feel more relaxed, your fellow classmates will appreciate a class free of disruptions.

    • Do not be afraid to ask questions before or during class

    • Do not exceed your physical limits...

...do only what is comfortable for your level of training and physical state and how you feel. If you cannot do all of the postures, do not feel intimidated or embarrassed. Remember, yoga is a process and we all had to begin somewhere.

    • Commit to one class per week & a little practice every day...

...through this consistent process you will begin to experience and enjoy the rewards of yoga. After some time your dedication will be rewarded with increased strength, flexibility, balance and an overall sense of well-being.

  4. Practice at Your Own Level

Yoga is absolutely non-competitive so there is no need to overstretch or strain and rest should always be taken when needed. Be kind and appreciative of yourself, where your are, and how far you have come. A healthier lifestyle and sense of accomplishment will certainly be attained when following these guidelines.
